Photo by @renan_ozturk // Yaks on the the long road home from Everest basecamp. The lulling sound of their bells, the fresh snow fall and the lack of trekkers in this moment is what makes this simple phone photo special to me. And the fact that our film set out to tell the story of the highest point on Earth purely from the indigenous Sherpa perspective. Follow @renan_ozturk for more from the roof of the world
Video by @bertiegregory // In an incredible rare predatory event, an Antarctic fur seal hunts macaroni penguins on land on the Island of South Georgia in the South Atlantic Ocean. This was hard to watch but I felt it was an important part of the macaroni penguins’ life story. Giant waves, razor sharp rocks, mountain climbs and these seals (usually hunting the penguin in the water) are just a handful of the challenges these penguins must overcome on a daily basis. Only the toughest individuals survive to pass on their genes to the next generation. Brutal as this encounter was, there was an unexpected twist, watch the whole series of Wild_Life: Resurrection Island to find out what happened at natgeo.com/wildlife. Photo by @kiliiiyuyan // A snow-covered basketball court in the Yup’ik village of Gambell, Alaska. Basketball is a major sport for indigenous peoples of North America, even on the sparsely populated and remote island of Saint Lawrence, in the middle of the Bering Sea. Photo by @Shonephoto (Robbie Shone) // Night falls upon base camp and an international team of explorers and scientists working to understand the mechanics of the Gorner glacier in Switzerland. On the skyline in the distance the iconic Matterhorn looms large. Such a special place.
Photo by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz Kingdom Centre, Riyadh, Saudia Arabia. This 99-story landmark apartment tower was completed in 2002, and is a symbol of modern Saudi Arabia. The top of the building contains a glassed-in walkway that offers panoramic views of the capital. To see more of our world from above, follow @geosteinmetz
Photo by @kengeiger./ If #Africa and beautiful sunsets are on your travel bucket list. Don't wait to check out the Maasai Mara area of #kenya. Besides the national reserve, there are numerous conservancy areas, tribal lands that have been combined to benifit wildlife and the local communities. For more images of the Maasi Mara, follow @kengeiger.
Photo by @max.lowe // To define wild in an experience for me would to be a silent observer, to sit and just for a moment quiet your ego and drive in the presence of complex and beautiful life beyond ourselves. Sitting and watching this female Jaguar stalk the banks of the Cuiaba River in Brazil was one of those moments, and one I revisit in my mind when I get lost in the noise. To see more from his travels to The Pantanal and Jaguars follow @max.lowe
Photo by @babaktafreshi When I founded The World at Night (TWAN) project 12 years ago with an international team of highly experienced night sky photographers, one of the main aims was to save the last remaining natural night skies on the planet by photos and stories that tell the values of this essential part of our nature, beyond being an astronomer’s laboratory. This is one of those places: La Palma, Canary Islands, where the night sky is protected by law, against light pollution; the extra careless light that doesn’t illuminates the ground but wastes to the sky. The locals appreciate this preserved heritage too which made their island an icon. Here the Milky Way’s bright core rises over salt production ponds next to the ocean, in a single 20-second exposure photograph. This resembles what I was able to see visually there, but without the Milky Way’s color. Follow me @babaktafreshi for more wonders of our planet’s nightscape, learn more about night sky protection on darksky.org and twanight.org . #saveournightsky#twanight#astrophotography#nightscape#nightphotography#canaryislands@natgeoimagecollection
Photo @Ladzinski / A small flock of #adelie#penguins cueing up as they consider making the plunge into the icy waters of Antarctica to hunt for krill. I’m speaking for myself here when I refer to the waters as “icy”, for these animals it’s simply just a day-to-day norm and their insulated bodies have the rest all sorted out. To get this photo I was dressed in a well insulated dry suit, laying in wait patiently for about 30 minutes as these cute penguins moved in around me. With numb toes, hands and face I was very thankful when the flock decided it was time to make the plunge. Photographed on assignment for @natgeo@sealegacy
Photo by @ChrisBurkard Vast mountainscapes and endless skiing. Those are usually the things associated with the Rocky Mountain range in Colorado. But at the base of the 14,000 ft Sangre De Cristo mountains lies the largest dune in America, the Star Dune. It’s a place of extremes, with temperatures that can range from -20 to 150 degrees fahrenheit depending on the season. It wasn’t until last year while teaching a photography workshop that I was able to stand on top of the Star Dune for the first time, but it certainly won’t be my last.
Photo by @taylorglenn // The summit glacier of Mt Kilimanjaro. The cone of Mt Meru in the hazy ether beyond. Pastel hues of sunrise in the sky. An exquisitely peaceful morning on the summit of Africa’s highest peak. Soon after making this image my guide informed me that he anticipated this glacier having around 10 years left before it was gone. This was 2 years ago. I can only wonder if this was an accurate timeline but it is happening. And regardless it is a tragic reality of the #anthropocene. I am grateful to have seen it with my own eyes and to have made this picture of a very special and beautiful place on this earth. #climatechange#glacier#africa#tanzania#kili#kilimanjaro
